So What Really Happens When You Get an Old Tattoo Removed?

Whether you want to erase an ex partner's name from your ring finger (remember that, Tamra Judge?) or take off a flaming "A" from your butt (hi, Tom Sandoval!), it's nice to know that there's still hope if you hate an old tattoo. On this week's episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County, Tamra brought her son Ryan to the dermatologist to remove a "money on my mind" tattoo from his neck. She joked that she was there for "moral support in case he passes out," but also to relish the moment, since she had warned him years before that he'd come to regret some of his ink eventually.

Ryan explained that he got that tattoo while going through a phase, and the older he gets, the more he wants everything "covered up." Tamra warned that removing her back tattoo was painful, but luckily Ryan was in good hands with Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Will Kirby.

BravoTV.com chatted with Dr. Kirby to learn more about the tattoo removal process.

Why do most people come in for tattoo removal?

Dr. Will Kirby: The overall, number one reason patients seek laser tattoo removal is because of an ex's name — as you can imagine, it's hard to be in a new healthy, relationship if you are constantly reminded of an old one. That said, the reasons people have tattoo regret is limitless; the simple fact of the matter is that people change, and the person you were 10 years ago isn't the person you are today, nor is it the person you'll be 10 years from now. Others remove tattoos for professional reasons, meaning they need to look more wholesome for their occupation. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that some tattoos are just really, really ugly!

Are certain tattoos more difficult to remove than others?

The biggest factor in removing tattoos is the color of the ink. Some ink colors, like black, are ironically the easiest to remove. Others, like some browns, pinks, oranges, and yellows are nearly impossible to remove. Additionally, tattoos on distal extremities like the fingers, toes, wrists, and ankles can take much longer to remove since lymphatic flow plays a vital role in ink resolution.

What is the fastest way to remove a tattoo?

There are multiple means by which you can remove a tattoo. As an example, in 2011, we attempted to remove a tattoo on Tamra's ring finger and the ink color, pink, simply didn't respond to treatment quickly. As such, she elected to have it surgically removed (Dr. Dubrow did the cutting and Eddie Judge proposed afterwards). So, again, pink has proven to be the biggest determining factor in laser tattoo removal. We in the aesthetic dermatology industry know that there are multiple means by which to remove a tattoo. Options include thermal destruction, cryotherapy, destruction with acid, and surgical excision. But the gold standard means by which to remove a tattoo is by laser tattoo removal.

Is the process painful? Do certain areas hurt more than others?

Laser tattoo removal is uncomfortable, but tolerable. The main association between tattoos and discomfort is the density of the ink. But location, specifically areas with less fat, like the ankle for example, can be more painful.

    How much does it cost?

Very generally speaking, it costs about $50 per square inch per treatment (roughly the size of a postage stamp). But this varies widely based on the size of the tattoo and how many sessions you'll need.

On average, how many sessions is typically needed to remove a tattoo?

Typically, most people need around 10 sessions. However, some older tattoos can resolve in as few as four or five treatments. And rarely, some tattoos need many more sessions to fade. In 2006, I authored the only paper in the medical literature that estimates how many treatments are required to remove a tattoo. The Kirby-Desai is recognized worldwide as an imperative tool in the laser tattoo removal process, and it takes six major factors into consideration, which aids a clinician in educating patients about reasonable timelines, treatment expectations, and the number of treatments necessary to achieve a clinical goal.

Does the tattoo completely disappear after?

Most tattoos can be removed completely, but some can only be faded. Rarely, because of patient skin type and ink color, tattoos won't respond to laser treatment at all. Again, this comes down to the parameters set forth by the Kirby-Desai scale.

SharpLight – Leader in Med-Aesthetic Services Makes Tattoo Removal More Comfortable

Prior to laser tattoo removal, many medical aesthetic and cosmetic clinics were stuck with offering their patients a range of creams, gels, and lotions to help eradicate tattoos. Although some were able to make a difference, none were able to remove the tattoo that was embedded in deep layers of skin.

Everyone goes through a range of stages throughout life, and sometimes, it's fun to get a reminder of those stages in the form of a tattoo. However, stages pass and people move on. This is where regret comes in. For medical aesthetic and cosmetic clinics with patients who have a tattoo they regret, a leader in med-aesthetic service makes tattoo removal more comfortable and less risky than traditional methods.

SharpLight Technologies Ltd. is an expert in the manufacturing of med-aesthetic devices – offering stand-alone and multi-technology solutions to bring superior clinical results. They have a history in the industry wherein they started in the clinical corporate environment, then founded the manufacturing company back in 2004.

    Delivering an innovative approach

Prior to laser tattoo removal, many medical aesthetic and cosmetic clinics were stuck with offering their patients a range of creams, gels, and lotions to help eradicate tattoos. Although some were able to make a difference, none were able to remove the tattoo that was embedded in deep layers of skin. Up until the 1980s, dermabrasion or excision were available, and in many cases, efficient aside from the high amount of pain and scarring. Nowadays, laser tattoo removal is a much more innovative, safe method that's more comfortable and less risky for the patient.

    Starting with high quality manufacturing

Israel, the world's hub for light-based and laser technology manufacturing, is where the process starts. SharpLight Technologies has a high-standard for cost-efficiency, safety, and reliability for all of the med-aesthetic devices they create. Although their research and development takes place in Israel, their customer service team is in the GTA – giving their clients peace of mind knowing they can reach out for assistance, support, and promotional materials as needed. They take manufacturing seriously, but they also employ a team of internationally recognized engineers, as well as clinical and marketing professionals to help their clients better reach the marketplace.

    Offering the benefits patients deserve

SharpLight Technologies offers a laser that is more targeted for the areas of the body with tattoos. This makes the entire process a lot more comfortable and less risky for the patient. Ultimately, it's incredibly beneficial compared to traditional methods. There is little to no blood loss, as well as minimal redness and swelling. The laser works by targeting the wavelengths of the colours found within the tattoo. The ink is displaced into small particles, and eventually, those particles are passed through the body. It's quick, easy, and efficient with removal taking multiple sessions between 3-4 weeks apart for up to a year.

    About SharpLight Technologies

SharpLight Technologies manufacturers and sells med-aesthetic devices that are created with safety, reliability, and of course, patient satisfaction in mind. They offer stand-alone and multi-technology solutions for superior clinical results in terms of tattoo removal, laser hair removal machine, skin rejuvenation, body contouring, and more. Their platforms use a range of technologies, such as lasers, infrared, energy-based dynamic pulse control, and multi-polar radio frequency.

Bride wants to ask her friend to cover up her swastika prison tattoo for her wedding

Bride-to-be admits she is struggling to tell her friend she can't come to her wedding with her SWASTIKA prison tattoo on display - after she claimed it would be 'too hot' to cover it up
  • Reddit user panorama_bride shared her story on the 'AmITheA**hole' subreddit
  • The 23-year-old explained that her friend Anna, 25, was bullied into getting a swastika tattoo when she was in prison and covers it up whenever she can
  • She said when she announced she was getting married, Anna told her she wouldn't be able to cover up the hateful tattoo on her chest because of the heat
  • The woman admitted that she was struggling with what she should do
  • Commenters suggested makeup or a halter dress, but many were shocked Anna would be willing to attend a wedding with such an offensive tattoo on display
  • A bride-to-be has revealed her friend has put her in a difficult situation by refusing to cover the swastika tattoo she was 'forced' into getting in prison because it will be 'too hot to hide' at her summer wedding.

Reddit user panorama_bride shared her conundrum on the 'AmITheA**hole' subreddit, saying that while she knows her story 'sounds fake,' it's a real problem, and she doesn't know what to do.

The 23-year-old explained her father runs a program that offers support and resources to people who have just come out of prison, through which she met Anna three years ago.

Conundrum: A Reddit user wants to know if she's wrong to ask her friend to cover up her swastika prison tattoo for her summer wedding (Stock Image )

The woman said the now-25-year-old was just 18 when she was put in prison for drug charges and was 'pushed around a lot' because she was so young.

'She was basically forced into a prison tattoo of a swastika, because a group of women were threatening her life if she didn't,' the Reddit user wrote. 'I believe her story is true and have no reason to doubt her.'

'Anna has struggled since getting out of prison and simply does not have the money to cover the tattoo, nor does she know what she would cover it with,' she added. 'It is right on her chest, so is hard to hide.

'I know she is embarrassed about the tattoo and she hides it with sweaters and high neck shirts. I've seen her try to cover it with makeup, but you can still see it.'

The bride said when she announced her wedding, Anna came up to her and told 'it woul d probably be the only time she would have the tattoo visible' because 'it will be too hot to hide' at the wedding, which is taking place in the summer of 2020.

'I didn't really know what to say at the time,' she admitted. 'It's going to be a large wedding. I can safely assume there will be some people offended by it. (I mean, it makes me feel a bit sick but I try to look past it.)'

To the rescue: Commmenters suggested that the woman get her friend special makeup or a halter dress to cover up the hateful tattoo on her big day

'I really don't know what to do. I don't want to hurt her feelings or make her feel more ashamed than she is,' she explained, 'but I also (selfishly) don't want this to be the focus of the wedding, or for any guests to be offended.'

The bride said she has been considering making Anna a member of her bridal party just so she can pick out a dress that will cover it up. She stressed that her friend is a 'good person now,' and she doesn't want to hurt her.

'My brother, when I told him, said that if she had a giant distracting birth mark, I wouldn't expect her to cover it, so why would I expect her to with this,' she recounted.

'I feel awful and am genuinely conflicted. I don't want to body shame her but also can't have that at my wedding.'

A majority of commenters insisted that the woman could not let Anna show up at her wedding with such a hateful symbol visible on her chest, and one even went as far as calling her brother a 'moron' for comparing the tattoo to a birthmark.

'Your brother's comparison isn't valid. A birthmark can be distracting but a swastika will offend others and has a lot of meaning attached to it,' someone else wrote. 'Can you offer to he lp with the cost of a cover up tattoo?'

Many other people pointed out there is plenty of makeup on the market that is thick enough to cover a tattoo or halter style dresses that will keep it hidden.

For real? Many people were shocked that the woman's friend would be willing to attend a wedding with such an offensive tattoo on display

'There are foundations that are made specifically to cover tattoos,' one person commented. 'The most inoffensive way to handle this may be to purchase some and gift it to her while saying that you want her to be comfortable at your wedding and you'd hate for someone to get the wrong idea for someone you care so much about.'

Others were stunned that Anna was even considering showing up at a wedding with her swastika tattoo on display.

'If she had any compassion for the people she's offendin g she would work harder to cover it,' one Reddit user noted. 'A short sleeveless dress is really not that much hotter than a short sleeveless dress with a plunging neckline. I would rather wear a frickin snow suit than go out in public with a swastika.'

One person wondered if Anna told the woman this far in advance as a way to manipulate her into paying for makeup or tattoo removal.

'I see many replies telling OP to help her find services or buy makeup for her but I feel that isn't OP's responsibility,' she person wrote. 'Anna needs to learn to do this for herself and that sometimes doing something or, as in this case, not doing something has consequences.'

The Reddit user further explained her situation in the comments section, saying her brother said what he did because he struggled with self-harm and eating disorders in the past and is now a 'huge believer in body confid ence.'

He has been spending a lot of time with Anna, and the bride thinks his opinions are rubbing off on her. She also noted that Anna tends to get heatstroke and is likely sick of covering herself up in the summer.

'My fiance thinks that Anna should cover the tattoo for the wedding,' she added. 'He is less concerned with what people will be saying if she didn't, but he wants it covered for the sake of us having a good, drama-free day.'

SPONSORED: Tattoo regret? Why experts recommend laser removal

Tattoos are extremely popular, however you may wish you never got yours.

The regret of having an unwanted tattoo is bad enough, but if you can't hide it under clothing then it can be unbearable. So how can you remove it and what solutions can you trust?

We spoke to Stephanie and Derna from the Face & Body Clinic, both of whom have won Aesthetician of the Year at Scotland's Medical Cosmetic Awards, to get their advice on how to remove tattoos safely.

Stephanie explained that whilst the internet promotes many tattoo removal methods including: salabrasion, acid peels and creams – she would only recommend laser tattoo removal.

"What you want is to remove your tattoo without any scarring or pigment loss resulting from your chosen method and currently laser tattoo removal is considered the safest option by the medical community and the NHS," says Stephanie.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal targets the pigment in the tattoo ink by shattering it into minuscule particles that your body can then eliminate through its natural waste system.

Stephanie added: "If you have professionally done tattoos then this will typically take eight sessions over 18 months. If you have an amateur tattoo – you'll find that you need fewer sessions as these typically use inferior quality ink which is rarely placed as deep in the skin as when done by a professional tattoo artist."

Laser tattoo removal is a process that requires patience. There are many variables that affect how quickly and effectively tattoo ink will fade.

Stephanie explains: "Your skin will take 6-8 weeks to fully recover between treatments – this is important as it prevents scarring and hypopigmentation. However, you should still expect some common side effects such as scabbing and swelling which are temporary during your body's healing process."

Stephanie warns that "not all laser tattoo removal devices advertised are genuine lasers, some are IPL or diode machines that are less effective or don't do all ink colours". She says professional laser brands in the UK you can trust include: Candela, Cynosure and Lumenis.

What questions should you ask when researching a clinic?

"I would ask if the clinic is registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland. If yes, then can you look up their inspection report online – a good report will show you that this a professional clinic you can trust. If not, then ask to see their practitioners training certificates to show that they are qualified to perform laser tattoo removal," suggested Derna.

So what about the other options?

Both Derna and Stephanie explained that they would not recommend these options but felt it was important to discuss them because many ill-informed people were suggesting them on the internet.

    Salabrasion tattoo removal

"This method is often promoted as a DIY home treatment on the internet and is an awful idea," says Stephanie. "It can be incredibly painful and is likely to leave a visible scar whilst the likelihood is few will have the endurance to continue deep enough to reach the tattoo ink anyway."

Salabrasion tattoo removal claims to use simple ingredients including plain table salt, tap water and an abrasive device. The person performing the procedure will apply the salt mixed with water to the area while using the abrasive gauze surface to vigorously rub the region until it turns a deep blood red.

They will then apply an antibiotic ointment and sterile gauze dressing, which is left in place for three days. After this time, the dressing will be removed and the skin, which will be raw, is covered once again with the salt for several hours following more antibiotic ointment to be redressed and sit for another three days.

"You're basically rubbing off your skin with a salty water gauze which you then put more salt on and let sit. We cannot stress enough how pouring salt into an open wound that you rub raw is a horrible idea and will often cause serious scarring or infection," said Derna.

    Acid peel tattoo removal

Acid removal procedures are supposed to remove the top layer of skin and allow your body to expel the tattoo ink. Glycolic Acid Peels can be administered by a skin professional and are sometimes promoted in beauty salons to remove tattoos.

"Superficial acid peels such as glycolic peels never get deep enough and are therefore very ineffective. Whilst some bleaching of the ink and skin may occur reducing the appearance of the tattoo this is likely to be temporary," said Derna.

Tattoo removal creams are readily available on the internet and promise you will see results in a matter of weeks simply through daily use.

"What they don't explain is that the creams contain chemicals like an acid peel to bleach the skin surface and temporarily fade the tattoo. The chemicals never completely penetrate through to the skin layer that holds the tattoo ink and as a result are very ineffective," explains Stephanie.

"Plus, improper use of any acid-based peel or cream can result in scarring or skin irritation," added Derna.

    You are not alone

Many people are choosing to have their tattoo removed for various personal reasons. And many celebrities are openly talking about removing their tattoos.

Victoria Beckham (pictured above) has been having tattoo removal services since 2015 with a magazine reporting that she is simply not as fond of body art as she used to be and decided to have it removed as an aesthetic choice.

When performed properly, laser tattoo removal leaves little to no scarring and is considered by the professionals to be the best and safest tattoo removal method. The NHS currently recommends laser tattoo removal as the preferred procedure for safe removal.

Embellish PB and Tatt2Away Team up to Offer a Fundamentally Different Kind of Tattoo Removal Service

A Non-Laser Tattoo Removal System Uses the Body's Natural Healing Process to Remove Ink and is Significantly Less Painful Than Traditional Tattoo Removal Procedures

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Embellish PB -- an industry-leading beauty and cosmetic studio in San Diego teams up with Tatt2Away, a company that specializes in tattoo removal and modification without the use of a laser. Unlike traditional laser removal procedures, Tatt2Away's system removes the ink by pushing the pigments to the surface of the skin rather than pushing them deeper into the body. This non-laser tattoo removal service is offered by certified technicians at Embellish PB as one of their primary services.

The Difference Between Tatt2Away and Basic Tattoo Removal

Basic tattoo removal procedure uses light to heat up the pigment and break it into smaller particles that are carried off into the body by white blood cells. Some colors such as whites, pinks, blues, yellows and purples aren't broken down easily with a laser. Studies suggest that when some colors are heated they produce toxins that can find their way to the lymphatic system. Also, its claimed that standard laser treatments are 10 times more painful than getting a tattoo.

Tatt2Away works by using the body's natural healing process to lift pigment out of the skin. The treatment uses a proprietary solution to liberate the old ink from the skin, which is drawn into a special scab and removed. When the scab is gone (2 - 3 weeks), the ink goes with it. The process is claimed to be the pain equivalent to getting a tattoo and has the ability to remove all colors of ink. This ultimately allows clients to remove the unwanted tattoo with less sessions helping them save money.

15 Cambridgeshire tattoo artists you should follow on Instagram if you're into body art

Tattoos are a deeply personal thing. Whether you get one because you simply love the design, or because there's a deeper meaning, you have to be proud of it - after all, even with the advances of laser removal, tattoos are pretty permanent.

If you were to go back just a few generations, tattoos were reserved for prisoners, gang members, or sailors. They were not acceptable to many people in society, and could be a source of judgement.

Nowadays, young people celebrate milestones with tattoos, they give themselves permanent reminders of someone or something, and they see them as an art form, with their body as the canvas.

It can take a while to pluck up the courage for your tattoo, and research is a key part. Whether it's scrolling through images to find inspiration, or trawling the internet looking for the best artist to convey your idea.

Instagram has become a pretty useful tool, with tattoo artists able to use it as a form of portfolio to showcase their work, and people able to search for their specific ideas using hashtags.

Cambridgeshire might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of incredible tattoo parlours and artists, but we've rounded up a list of the Instagram handles of some of the best in the county for you to keep an eye on.

Maybe bear these in mind next time you drunkenly consider getting a tattoo from a dodgy backstreet parlour on your holidays.

    1. Varo at Blood of Angels @Varoprundea

Varo is a resident tattoo artist at Blood of Angels in Cambridge, specialising in abstract, linework and custom script.

His Instagram shows off his impressive array of work, and his particular skill when it comes to script work.

    2. Ania at Blood of Angels @skrokink

Ania is also a resident at Blood of Angels in Cambridge, specialising in dot-work pattern, mandala art and line work.

Having started at Blood of Angels in March, Ania already has an impressive array of work on Instagram.

    3. Jose Bejerano at Blood of Angels @berentattoo

He also has a wide variety of pop culture and anime inspired designs, with vibrant colours standing out alongside bold line work.

He also does dot-work and black work as well, although it's the anime tattoos that really jump out and grab your eye.

    4. Georgi Kolev at King St Collective @g.kolev_tattoo

Georgi works at King Street Collective in Cambridge, mostly in greyscale for his designs, whether they're fantasy or realism.

    5. Benyur Kaptan at King St Collective @tattoobeynur

Beynur is the proud owner of King Street Collective and his designs are to die for.

Combining strong line work with delicate watercolour-style splashes of colour, Beynur creates captivating and creative designs.

Man Uses Cheese Grater to Remove Tattoo a Week After Getting It Done

An Argentinian man desperate to have his tattoo removed just a week after having it done, used a cheese grater to scratch it off, even if it meant letting go of some of his skin in the process.

The 21-year-old man, who preferred to remain anonymous, opted for the unusual and most likely painful tattoo removal method two years ago, but a video and pictures of his arm, before and after, only just went viral, after one of his friends decided to post them online. A resident of the Argentinian city of Mendoza, the protagonist of the viral footage was located by local media reporters and was happy to share his motivation for using a cheese grater to remove a fresh tattoo he had had done on his wrist.

"I had the tattoo done and a week later I wanted to join the airport police. Although among the requirements on the website it is not mentioned, I was told that I could not work there with visible tattoos," the unnamed man said. "This happened in August 2017, I was 19 years old at the time. The other reason I did that to myself was aesthetic. I am very keen on details and I did not really like how the tattoo was left. I searched on YouTube for ways to remove it. Firstly I tried with a pumice stone, but it did not work. Then I continued with the grater. It hurt and bled a lot. I had to bandage it a lot and apply disinfectant. A week later I went to the hospital and I had a tetanus vaccination."

"It hurt and bled a lot. I had to bandage it a lot and apply disinfectant," the man added, saying that he regretted his decision at first, and would not recommend the method to anyone.

"In that moment, I regretted it, of course I did. But when I saw it had gone a lot, I did not worry more. But I would not recommend it to anybody."

Tattoo artists around the world have been commenting on this viral cheese grater removal method, and the general consensus is that you're much better off sticking to the tried and true laser removal. It's not exactly painless either, but at least it won't leave a bad scar, or even worse, a crater-like wound.

"It is possible to have a mark your whole life. Doing it like this is worse because it gets stuck to the skin," tattoo shop owner Diego Staropoli said.

"It was removed because the tattoo artist was s***. A well-done tattoo is not easily removed, You end up with a kind of crater," another person commented.

A pal named Martias Costas shared the images online showing what appears to be skin dangling of the man's wrist.

Pictures of his bloodied arm have only just emerged, more than two years after the tattoo was said to have been removed.

The man told local media at the time he removed the tattoo because he said it would hinder his job prospects.

He tried to look up ways online on how to remove a tattoo at home.

His first attempt was to use a pumice stone before he settled with a cheese grater.

The bizarre removal method left him needing a vaccine.

The lad told local media: "I had the tattoo done and a week later I wanted to join the airport police.
